Google Sitemaps improvements

I tried to access Google Sitemaps this morning from my bookmarks only to get the custom Google error page:

Right off the bat I new something was up. I always use my bookmark to access Google sitemaps. So with a quick Google search I find that the new URL is OK, so now I'm wondering what else has changed? Well now Google Sitemaps goes into slightly more details.

  • There are Query stats that gives information about "Top search queries" and "Top search query clicks".

  • There are Crawl stats that provide distribution information for pages that Google has crawled.

  • There is Page analysis that shows you how the Googlebot sees your site.

  • There is also Index stats where you can use Google's Advanced Search page to find out how your site is indexed.

You can also view basic indexing information about any site. Just enter the site URL in the View stats for field on the Site Overview page and click View.

What I like is that if your site isn't verified, you can still see "Sitemap details and errors"
as well as "Indexing information about your site". Once you verify your site you have access to

  • Query stats about your site
  • Crawl stats about your site
  • Page analysis of your site
  • URLs from your site that Googlebot was unable to crawl, and why Googlebot couldn't crawl them

These new features are an added bonus that gives slightly more webmaster info for the webmaster.
